Ruth Plumly Thompson
Ruth Plumly Thompson (1891 - 1976) was an American écrivaine of children's books; particularly known to have Co ntinué the series of the novels on the Country of OZ initiated by L. Frank Baum after the death of this last in 1919.
Thompson was born with Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, and began its career in 1914 when it sold news with newspapers and magazines various. Between 1921 and 1939, it published each year an additional novel on OZ. They all were illustrated by John R. Neill.
The contributions of Thompson on the country of OZ are alive and imaginative, introducing a great number of new characters. However, it takes again a recurrent theme through its novels: a child (native boy or girl of the United States) and a supernatural companion (in general an animal which speaks) cross together the country of OZ or his neighbouring areas and meet a community whose members activate themselves around a single spot. Captured, they are forced to take part in this same activity.
It had main tendency to develop stories of love; she insisted on humor and always wrote for the children, unlike Baum which did not wish any restriction on its readers.
