Geography

Located halfway between Poitiers and Niort, placed at the west of the canton, the commune with the form of a quadrilateral. It is on a plate of grounds limestones and grounds Jurassic with a very deep red basement: " red grounds with châtaigniers". North is undulating and of the woodlands and the south is made up large plains. Canton of Lusignan

Church Saint-Hilaire inscrity with the additional Inventory, chorus and transept, on April 17th, 1935, temple (one of largest of the west of the France), registers with the Additional Inventory on September 21st, 1998; in 1993, construction of an organ which uses the pulpit which was elevated for the base of the dresser, old markets built in 1863, restored in 1994 and museum of the sewing machine, first of this kind in Europe, approximately 300 sewing machines old going back to 1839 to 1910, all in operating condition.

There is with Venours, a large village of the commune, an Agricultural college of European reputation. In 1943, Mr. Xavier Bernard bequeathed to the Ministère of Agriculture the field of Venours and an important capital so that a school of agriculture and an agricultural experimental center are created. Currently an agricultural college replaces the old regional school of Agriculture. Also the National institute of the Agronomic research installed several antennas.

Personalities related to the commune

Marie of Hire, writer, poet, painter, born Weyrich on March 20th, 1878 and deceased on April 25th, 1925 with Avalon. She marries, on May 21st, 1904, Adolphe d' Espie of Hire, known as Jean of Hire, him even author of novels of science fiction to successes (inter alia) and always very required.

Girl junior by Pasteur Eugene Weyrich and Julie, Célina Foal, father and mother of 6 other children.

Little girl of Pasteur Nicolas Poulain, whose its paleonthologic collection of fossils vertebrate Jurassic Native of Le Havre was offered to the cantonal museum Lausanne in Suisse including/understanding more than 1500 parts.

The Collection of poems published under the name of Marie Weyrich: the gardens of the evening , was very appreciated by the critic at her exit. Marie of Hire has very well-known this painter. Its workshop was located at 15 Rue Hégésippe Moreau in PARIS (18th) where also that of PICABIA was.

Marie of Hire was member of the company of the men of letters .

This artist painted very many paintings while taking as a starting point the area of the Tarn and the Garonne (with MONTAUBAN, in the family home located at Vignarnaud) and of the Tarn (with CASTRATE), where she lived in her youth, with its family.
