Russian Hill (San Francisco)
Russian Hill is a residential district of San Francisco, in California, offering sights on the unit of the bay, in particular on the Bay Bridge, the Comté of Sailor, the Golden Spoils Bridge and Alcatraz. Russian Hill accommodates in particular the prestigious San Francisco Art Institute, located on Chestnut Street, between Jones Street and Leavenworth Street.
Geography
Russian Hill is located directly at the north (and slightly below) of the district cossu of Nob Hill, at the south of Fisherman' S Wharf and at the west of North Beach. The Colline is bordered in the west by the districts of Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow and the Marina.It is generally considered that Russian Hill is delimited in the west by Van Ness Avenue, in the south by Pacific Avenue, the east and the North-East by Colombus Avenue and the Baie of San Francisco in north. The section of Lombard Street known for its laces (between Hyde Street and Leavenworth Street) is located on Russian Hill, and the line of Tramway to traction by cable ( cable bus ) Powell-Hyde passes in top of the hill to go down again towards Fisherman' S Wharf.
History
The name of the district goes back to the era of the Gold rush, when new arrivals discovered modest a Russian Cimetière with the top of the hill. Although not having never been identified officially, the bodies were allotted to merchants of furs and Russian sailors of Fort Ross. The cemetery was moved, but the name remains associated with this district, where the presence of the Russian community is unimportant - this one on the other hand is concentrated in Richmond District, much more in the east.
