Russian Company of America

The Russian Compagnie of America (in English Russian-American Company , in Russian Русско-американскаякомпания ) was an semi-official launched by Grigory Shelikhov and Nikolai Rezanov and financed company of trade by the Tsar Paul I in 1799.

The charter, one 20 years duration renewable, granted the monopoly of the trade to the company on all the Russian possessions in North America, including the Aleutian Islands and the territories until the latitude of the parallel 55e northern. One second charter in 1821, extended the concession more to the south, until the parallel 51e. According to this charter, a third of the profits was allocated to the tsar.

Under Alexandre Baranov, which controlled the area of 1790 with 1818, a permanent establishment was created in 1804 with Novo-Arkhangelsk (current Sitka in Alaska) and a flourishing trade of fur was organized.

The company built forts in what today is the Alaska and the California. The Strong Ross, on the Californian coast, just in the north of San Francisco, was the southernmost station of the Russian America (rebuilt today, it was transformed into historical museum).

But in the Years 1820, the profits of the trade of the fur started to decline. As of 1818, the Russian government had begun again to the merchants who held the charter of trade, the control of the company. The explorer and official representative of the Russian government Ferdinand Petrovich Wrangel, which had been administrator of the interests of the government in Russian America one decade earlier, was the first president of the company during his governmental control. The company ceased its marketing activities in 1867, when the sale of Alaska transferred control from this area to the the United States.
