Russel Banks is a American writer born the March 28th 1940 in the Massachusetts. It passed its childhood in the New Hampshire in an extremely modest medium. After studies at the university he travels, spends even some time in Jamaica. He wrote novels, news and poetry. Its work was translated into 20 languages. He currently teaches the contemporary literature with Princeton. Since 1998 he is member of the American Academy of Arts and Lettres.
Its writings are traversed by two large topics: the research of the paternal figure and the description of the world of the people of modest means collapsing under the weight of a hard and poor daily life or tragedy. Russell Banks is very active politically, not hesitating to criticize its government openly (it gave an opinion recently against the intervention in Iraq and against the Patriot Act ). In February 1998 and up to 2004, it succeeds Wole Soyinka while becoming the third president of the international Parliament of the writers created by Salman Rushdie. It is today the founder president of The north american network off cities off asylum , which was given for mission of establishing in the whole world of the places of asylum for threatened writers or in exile (Wole Soyinka and Salman Rushdie is vice-presidents).
Two of its novels were adapted to the cinema: Of beautiful following days (realized by the Canadian Atom Egoyan - Grand Prix with the Cannes festival 1997) and Affliction (realized in 1997 by Paul Schrader). Banks also wrote the film adaptation of the book of Jack Kerouac On the road for Francis Ford Coppola.
