Localization

Located in the Sundgau, in the south of the plain of Alsace on the communes of Saint-Louis (district of Neuweg), Rosenau, Village-Nine, Bartenheim and Kembs, this reserve is opened with the public and has marked out paths. These paths are traced and maintained by a group German, French and Swiss pensioners, the Broken Arms , which also built many observatories in the reserve. It is crossed by the Augraben, the single affluent of the the Rhine to be thrown to it in the Département of Haut-Rhin. Besides this brook gives its name to the commune of Rosenau.

In its center is located the imperial Pisciculture of Huningue. Built under Napoleon III in 1852 for the breeding of the Salmon and the Trout, it was the first industrial pisciculture of Europe. Today, it is always in activity and contributes to the repopulation of the the Rhine. Other programs of reintroduction are also carried out in the small Alsatian Camargue, in particular one bearing on the Cistude S, an endemic species of tortoise of the Rhenish plain and which disappeared at the end of the 18th century.

The small Alsatian Camargue is also the only natural reserve of Metropolitan France to accommodate in its center a research station. Financed by funds Swiss and attached to the university of Basle, this research station undertakes many studies, in particular on the behavior of the nightingale.
