Rupat

Rupat is an island located in the Détroit of Malacca, not far from the east coast of the island Indonesia of Sumatra, of which it is separated by an arm of the sea from 5 km. The island is punt and marshy. Of circular form, it has a diameter of approximately 50 km. Its surface is approximately 1.520 km ².

Its climate is hot and wet and it rains there abundantly during most of the year. It is said that the sand beach white of Pasir Panjang (" sand long" in Malayan), which is stretched on 17 kilometers of length and 30 meters broad, is longest of Indonesia. De Rupat, one sees the coast of Malaysia.

Administratively, Rupat belongs to the kabupaten (department) of Bengkalis of the province of Riau.

Population

Rupat is populated little. The inhabitants are Malais and Akit, a population Indigène which maintains their culture and lifestyle.

The inhabitants of Rupat have bonds with their cousins of Malaysia. The Malaysian Ringgit is accepted besides there.
