Running of the Needles
The Running of the Needles is a Courant sailor located in the Indian Ocean. It runs out along the east coast South-African, in a south-western direction. It then undergoes off South Africa a rétroflexion towards the East to form the Current return of the Needles, recirculating in the Indian Ocean.
It takes its name of the course nearest: the Cape Agulhas (Cape of the Needles) whose name was given by the Portuguese explorers.
The current of the Needles is one of the strongest currents of surface and one of most regular than one knows. It undergoes few variations of volume during the year and its maximum speed is higher than 5 km/h. Its rétroflexion is caused by the meeting of the more cold western currents of the Atlantic Ocean (running Benguela and circumpolar current the Antarctic).
This meeting with the Western currents causes vast swirls which constitute the mechanism by which the warm water return of the Indian Ocean is carried out towards the Atlantic Ocean.
The mixture of warm water and cold explains the permanent agitation of the sea in these trimmings. In this zone, the very powerful winds of West sometimes come to be opposed to the marine current of surface and as their direction is often contrary, the waves created by this meeting reach impressive heights, at the origin of many shipwrecks.
