Freiburg (in German Freiburg ) is a town of Suisse, it is a common Suisse of the Canton of Freiburg, on the Sarine. It is the capital of the Canton of Freiburg and the chief town of the District of Sarine.

History
Based on a terrace overhanging the Sarine in 1157 by the duke Berthold IV of Zaehringen. On a journey in the area, to undoubtedly put order in its possessions and taking account of a “whole of considerations political, military, geographical and economic”, Berthold IV chooses a terrace overhanging Sarine, in order to establish there a “new” city which it strengthens: Freiburg (of “free” German frei and Burg “strengthened place”, name coming from the freedoms granted by the founder and to bring closer to that of Freiburg im Breisgau). As for the foundation of the city, it can be fixed, according to the Pierre historian of Zurich, at the year 1157. In 1481 Freiburg enters the Swiss Confédération. An agglomeration of approximately 80 000 inhabitants, including/understanding the communes of Freiburg, Givisiez, Barns-Paccot, Villars-sur-Glâne, Marly, Corminbœuf, Belfaux, Avry, Matran, Guin (German Düdingen) and Tavel (German Tafers) is in the process of constitution.
Authorities
The city is directed by a Town council of five members full-time (nine before 2001) whose president or mayor carries the title of syndic. The lawful capacity is exerted by a General advice (legislative) of 80 members, whose president was the syndic until the beginning of 1982.
