Rundetårn

Rundetårn (or Rundetaarn , literally “the round tower”) is a turn 17th century with Copenhagen with the Denmark. The tower belongs to the whole of the Trinitatis, which was built to provide to the scholars of the time a astronomical Observatoire, a church and a Bibliothèque.

History

This famous tower was built by order of the king Christian IV and was designed by the architect Hans van Steenwinckel the Young person. The first stone was posed the July 7th 1637, and the tower was completed in 1642. The church was not completed before 1656 and the library before 1657. The observatory which is the oldest astronomical observatory still in service in Europe, and the library belonged to the Université of Copenhagen until in 1861. Among the astronomers who used the observatory one can quote Ole Rømer (1644 - 1710). The Astéroïde 5505 Rundetårn commemorates this building.

Structure

A helical corridor (7 ½ turns) leads to the top of the tower, where are located the observatory and small a Planétarium. The corridor gives access also the church and the bookstore.
