Ruma

Ruma , in Serb Cyrillic Рума, is a city and a municipality of Serbia located in the autonomous province of Voïvodine, district of Syrmie (Srem). In 2002, the city counted 32.125 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is center 59.858.

History

A village called Ruma is mentioned for the first time in a Turkish document going back to 1566 - 1567. At that time, it comprises only 49 houses.

In 1718, Ruma passes under the domination of the Habsbourgs. In 1746, the town of Ruma is founded beside the old village.

The November 24th 1918, after the fall of the Austria-Hungary, the Parliament of Syrmie, joined together in Ruma decides fastening of the area to the Royaume of Serbia.
