Rule of Christ Redeemer

The Christ Redeemer ( Cristo redentor ) is the name given to the large statue representing the Christ, located on the mount of the Corcovado. She is 30 m high, weighs: 1200 tons with a scale of 28 meters. One can see it of all the town of Rio de Janeiro. The idea, launched by a contest organized by the Church in 1921, was to build a religious monument for the centenary of the Independence of the Brésil (1822). Work, going back to 1931 and inaugurated in the presence of the president Getúlio Vargas, is due to the collaboration of the French sculptor Paul Landowski and of the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, which converts with the Catholicisme.

Classified historic building since 1973, the Christ of Corcovado is the tourist place more attended of Rio with 1,8 million visitors per annum.

July 7th, 2007, this monument was selected like one of the Seven new wonders of the world.
