Ruges

The people of Ruges come from the Baltique. Arrived near the Roman Empire about the 4th century after J. - C, they go up Oder and pass in Silesia, then, after having driven out Quades in 406, in Moravie.

After the collapse of the Empire of Attila, they separate in two groups:

  • a first group is established in Thrace and enters to the service of the Byzantine Empire (Jordanès, Getica , 266).
  • a second group, more settles in a territory difficult to delimit in the north of the Danube between Low-Austria and Moravie.

After the collapse of the empire of Attila in 453, Ruges live under the ostrogothic pressure of the kingdom of Pannonia. The king of Ruges, Flaccitheus joint then with the coalition of Germanic people directed against the Ostrogoths (Eugippe, Vita sancti Severini , 5,2). The coalition undergoes a defeat on Bolia in 469.

It is necessary to await the voluntary withdrawal of the Ostrogoths in 472 to see the situation of Ruges improving. They can then extend their influence in this Danubian area of the Norique, in particular under the reign of the king Feletheus (also called Feva or Fewa).
