Rufisque

Rufisque is a city of the Senegal, located at 25 km in the South-east of Dakar. Its population was of 179.797 inhabitants at the time of the census of 2002. This locality constitutes the required passage to enter the capital Dakar or to leave there. Indeed, the peninsula of Dakar waters the small coast via a city in charge of history; Beyond real estate speculations (Its Excellence Abdoulaye Wade thus promises to develop a new international airport not far from the city) Rufisque is a new reference sénégalaise today. The old commercial traditions tend to be accustomed of an Europeanization innéluctable.

History

The history of the city goes back to the 16th century when the village of fishermen named was founded Teung-Guedj. In fact, in wolof, the city bears the name of Tëngéej .

In June 1880, like Dakar, Gorée and Saint-Louis, the city is set up in commune of full exercise by the France, whereas Senegal is a French colony. Its inhabitants have French nationality then.

Administration

The locality belongs to the district of Rufisque and the Département of Rufisque in the Région of Dakar.

Like Dakar, Pikine and Guédiawaye, Rufisque in common district since the decree n° 96-745 of April 30th 1996 is cut out.

The city counts three of them: Rufisque East, Western Rufisque and Northern Rufisque.

The closest localities are Kheury Souf, Guendel, Dangou and Kheury Kaw.

Population

At the time of the censuses of 1988 and 2002, Rufisque respectively counted 142.340 and 143.281 inhabitants.

End 2007, according to the official estimates, the population would rise with 162.056 people, including 60.749 for Rufisque East, 37.634 for Western Rufisque and 63.673 for Northern Rufisque.

Economic activities

Rufisque was a long time the capital of the Arachide and " Rufisquoise" was a famous oil. It was also the main port of Senegal before the expansion of Dakar.

Today employment is also in the spinning mills, a cement factory, a factory Valda, the industry of the plastic shoe (Bata), like in the services and tourism. During the Hivernage it happens that the abundant rains associated with the rise with the tide start floods, and one could tax the town of “small Venice of the third world”.
