The street of the Contractors is a street of the 15th district of Paris in the Quartier of Grenelle.

Situation

The street of the Contractors begins on the level from the n°76 from the which occurred Emile Zola, close to the place Charles Michels, and finishes on the level of the n°102 of the Rue of the Cross Nivert, close to the public garden Saint-Lambert.

It contains mainly large residential buildings built for the majority during the 19th century during the development of the village of Grenelle.

A barracks of the Brigade of firemen of Paris is present at the level of the place Violet, located at the crossing of the street of the Contractors and the street Violet, and precedes the public garden public garden Violet .

The street also contains the catholic parish Saint Jean-Baptiste of Grenelle close to the end of the street the Commercial.

History

Previously called secondary road n°10 (A), the street of the Contractors owes his current name to the contractors of the old village of Grenelle of the 19th century who had the grounds bordering the street.

This way started, before 1948, on the level of the quay of Javel, become since the quay André Citroen. On this date, the portion ranging between the Javel quay and the avenue Emile Zola were detached from the street of the Contractors and took the name of Rue of Engineer Robert Keller.

The decree of March 29th, 1968 lengthened the length of the street of the Contractors by including there a portion of the street Linois.

Events

April 8th, 1871, at the time of the Common of Paris, the street of the Contractors was bombarded at the time of the attack of the troops of gouverment of Adolphe Thiers on the strengthened enclosure of Paris de Grenelle with Passy.

In 1910, part of the street was flooded at the time of the great rising of the Seine at the beginning of year (see Crue of the Seine of 1910).

Activities

The street of the Contractors became a commercial street thanks to the presence of many trade to the bottom of the dwellings. It with the characteristic to have some trade Iran iens, heritage of the establishment of these people in the district of Beaugrenelle towards the end of the 20th century.

Natural risks

According to the prevention plan of the risk flood (PRO) of Paris, part of the street of the Contractors is located in a zone supposed easily flooded.

The street is also exposed at the risk of movement of ground because of the presence of old careers of limestone fresh water in the vicinity.
