The street Rambuteau is a street of the center of Paris which connects the district of the Halles, in the 1 {{er}} district, with the Quartier of the Marsh in the 4 {{E}}, after having skirted the Center Georges-Pompidou. It occupies a particular place in the history of Paris, because it is the first street dug through the medieval center, a few years before the great work haussmanniens.
The street Rambuteau has a 975 meters length for a width of 13 meters.
History
The street Rambuteau was created by an ordinance of the king Louis-Philippe I {{er}} dated March 5th, 1838. It received since 1839 the name of the prefect in exercise of the the Seine, Claude Philibert Barthelot, count de Rambuteau. It absorbed the street of Ménétriers, between the streets Beaubourg and Saint Martin's day; the street of Chanverrerie (that which Victor Hugo prefers to name the Poor wretches “street of Chanvrerie” in , high place of “the epopee street Saint-Denis” of volume IV of its work), between the streets Saint-Denis and Mondétour; the Trailed street, between the Montmartre streets and of the Day.
It is indeed the prefect Rambuteau which decided the creation of this 13 meters broad street, considerable dimension for the time. The center of Paris had up to that point preserved its medieval urban fabric made up essentially of narrow streets in which hygiene was doubtful and difficult circulation. Taking its functions in 1833, one year after a great cholera epidemic, Rambuteau decided to apply the theories hygienists of the time by boring a broad way in full center of Paris. A few years later, the Préfet Haussmann was to apply the principles of Rambuteau to a scale much vaster in boulevards such as the Boulevard of Sébastopol than crosses the street Rambuteau.
