Rudolphe the reindeer with the red nose

History

Rudolphe the reindeer with the red nose is, at the beginning, an American popular history written in 1939 by some Robert L. May, then a song, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer written by Johnny Marks in 1949.

Rudolphe is the ninth reindeer of Father-Christmas who, thanks to his red nose of an incredible luminosity, will guide Father-Christmas during his distribution of gifts, the Christmas Eve.

Before Rudolphe

Before 1939, the sledge of Father-Christmas was drawn by 8 reindeers, as described in the poême has Visit From St Nicholas , so known under the name The night before Christmas (Christmas day before). There are 4 males and 4 females:

  • Dasher (that which gallops) - the fastest reindeer.
  • Dancer (the dancer) - the most gracious reindeer (it is a female).
  • Prancer (which pavane) - the most powerful reindeer.
  • Vixen (the vixen) - It is beautiful and powerful, like her Prancer companion.
  • Makes (Comet) - It brings happiness to the children.
  • Cupid (Covetous) - It brings the love to the children.
  • To give (the Thunder, in German) -
  • Blitzen (the Light, in German) - It brings the light (It is often regarded as a male)

After Rudolphe

After Rudolphe , which is " entered the histoire" , like says it the song, other reindeers were " ajouté" , such as for example Robbie, by the BBC Television in 1999, or Olive, which is not really a reindeer, but rather a bitch which wants absolutely to return in the team of the reindeers of Father-Christmas, according to the cartoon of Matt Groening Olive the other reindeer in 1999 (in French: Olive, the other reindeer ), where Blitzen is sick.

The song

The song at summer written by Johnny Marks in 1949.

Here thus translation of the song:

You know Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen.
You know Comet and Cupid, Donner and Blitzen.
But do you remember the most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolphe the reindeer with the red nose, had very a nose shining.
And if you had seen it, you would have even said that it blazed.
All the other reindeers, made fun of him and insulted it.
They never let poor Rudolphe play their sets of reindeers.

Then by a misty Christmas day before, the Father Christmas said:
" Rudolphe, with your nose if shining, wouldn't you like to guide my sledge this night? "

And all the reindeers liked it.
And they shouted with joy:
" Rudolphe the reindeer with the red nose, you will enter the history! "

Various versions

This song was interpreted innumerable times. One can retain some of them, as examples:
