Rudolf Peierls

Sir Rudolf Ernst Peierls (June 5th 1907 - September 19th 1995), physicist German theorist. He settled in England in 1933, and made there all the remainder of his university career. He was anobli in 1968.

Biographical elements

Peierls was born with Berlin in 1907 in an Jewish family, her father was engineer. He studied the Physique at the universities of Berlin, Munich (with Sommerfeld) and Leipzig (with Heisenberg), he will obtain his doctorate in 1929 there. It left then for Zurich as assistant Pauli. Followed a great number of briefs stays in all the great centers of theoretical physics of Europe, Russia included. It is besides at the time of a conference with Odessa that it met his future wife, Genia.

In 1933, it obtained a purse of the Institut Rockefeller and left in England, where it worked at the universities of Manchester and Cambridge. Of 1937 with 1963, he was full professor with the Université of Birmingham, initially named on the pulpit of mathematical applied (1937-1945), then to that of mathematical physics (1945-1963). It finishes its career with the Université of Oxford, where it was named professor of theoretical physics Wekeham in 1963, until its reprocess in 1974.
