Rudolf Hilferding

Rudolf Hilferding (August 10th 1877 with Vienna - February 10th 1941 with Paris) is a German Socialiste of Austrian origin.

Biography

It militates very early in the revolutionary movements and writes articles in the review Marxiste " Die Neue Zeit" (New Times), then becomes political professor of economy at the school of the German socialist party (at the time it is a Marxist party) with Berlin.

Having obtained German nationality, he becomes editor association of the review " Freiheit" (freedom). He is opposed to the left wing of his party and in particular to Rosa Luxemburg. Refusing to adhere to the Third international, it leaves USPD and turns over to the democratic social party (SPD).

Named Minister for Finance first once in 1923, it is constrained to resign quickly under the pressure of the German middle-class. It will have had nevertheless time to prepare a reform of the taxation and to try to index the mark on gold. Hilferding is devoted then entirely to the policy and in May 1928, the victory of the social democrats to the legislative elections enables him to obtain the wallet of finances again. It will occupy this station until October 1929 when a conflict with the director of the Reichsbank forces it to resign. Between 1930 and 1933, Hilferding is devoted entirely to the policy to defend the socialist ideas which are them his.

The takeover by Hitler in 1933 obliges it to flee the Germany and to take refuge in Suisse where it continues its activity of politician. Hilferding joined Paris in 1938 and will remain until June 1940 there when it decides to leave for the south France. Being able to receive only one provisional help on behalf of the former French socialist directors, Hilferding tries to embark in Marseilles for the United States to escape an research opinion launched by the German police force. In spite of the contacts and the assistances of which it lays out, Hilferding is captured in Arles in February 1941 by the police force French and delivered to Gestapo. Interned with the prison of Health, Hilferding probably committed suicide in its cell on February 10th 1941.
