Rudolf Charousek
Rudolf Charousek (in Hungarian: Charousek Rezső , born the September 19th 1873 with Prague; † the April 18th 1900 with Budapest) was a Master of failures Hungarian, prematurely deceased.
Charousek discovered the failures with the college. Passion for this play was such as it led it to stop its studies of Droit in 1893, in order to devote itself to a career of professional player of failures. It bound friendship with the Hungarian engineer Maróczy, with which it often played.
It was so poor that, not being able to treat to a specimen of the bulky collection of openings of '' Bilguer '', it recopied it in the public libraries. Underfed, it contracted well quickly the Tuberculose.
It took share with the first tournament of failures by correspondence in 1893, which was organized by the kingdom of Hungary, and shared the first price with Maróczy.
Following his first successes in Budapest, one started to invite it in the international tournaments. It created sensation with the tournament of Nuremberg in 1896, by gaining a bright victory against the candidate with the world title Emanuel Lasker. In spring of the same year, it shared the first place with the former world champion Mikhail Tchigorine with the tournament of jubilée of Budapest, but lost at the time of the match of decides between. The Company of failures of Berlin organized in 1897 a memorial at the time of the 70 years of the club. Charousek gained this competition, empochant the reward of 2000 Mark. With the tournament of Cologne in 1898 it was second ex-æquo with two other players, then it gained the “tournament of the four Masters” of Budapest preceding Maróczy.
After such successes, Charousek was had a presentiment of like candidate against Lasker for the world title, but the meeting was not to never take place: Charousek died in 26 years of tuberculosis.
One estimated his Classement Elo at 2734, reached in March 1900. From May 1899 in April 1900 it was classified like the 6th best player of the world.
Charousek was a specialist in the Gambit of the king, whom it successfully used even against Lasker.
