Origin

Belonging to the fair Branch and red, it is thus a Spanish cousin of the Blonde of Aquitaine. According to the association of the stockbreeders, it would have arrived with the people Gaël, Celt, coming from France. During invasions, the livestock of this mountainous area was little touched and built an ox reputation of work and butchery. It is high in Galicia, where it represents still today the majority of the cattle population. The herd book was open in 1933. Into the Sixties, ameliorative crossings introduced blood of simmental, Brown swiss and south Devon. They influenced morphology, sinking the dress of fair towards the red and improving conformation of carcass: district of the trunk and especially of the thighs. Stable manpower turn around 190.000 animals. On the other hand the number of registered reproducers passed from 17000 to 22000 between 1986 and 1993. The period of the crossings is finished. The improvement passes now by the installation of a powerful program of selection.

Morphology

It wears a dress wheat linked, with nuances being able to go from fair clearly to the red. The legs are clearer. The mucous membranes are dew. Its horns are short, clear with black point.
C' is a race of big size, 135-150 cm with the garrot.

Aptitudes

It is an old race with to do everything, producing milk and meat and giving its labor force. The use of dairy races and the mechanization of agriculture transformed it into race bouchère. The crossings of the Sixties saved to him the weight which was a little lacking to him and the selection currently carried out gives him a productivity reconnue.
La cow is fertile and good mother. She vèle easily, has a good longevity and its milk (2700 kg by lactation) nourishes calf well. Its area mother being mountainous, it was selected for its rusticity and adapts well to the breeding of semi-extensive outdoor, as with the fattening in intensive system.
Its morphology is used for the industrial crossings. Bulls were selected on their capacity to transmit a weight of weak birth (easy birth) with a good speed of growth and a good conformation of carcass. Their seed is used in artificial insemination on females of dairy race (better valorization of calves) and on females of races of the south of the country adapted to the arid conditions. (improvement of the conformation of carcass)
