History

There are two assumptions on the name of the commune. Its name of origin is " ROZETUM IN BRIA". One would like that " rozetum" has a relationship to the importation of the culture of the pinks by Thibault IV of Champagne what would seem in agreement with the armorial bearings of the city where three pinks are represented and whose currency is " ROZA INTER FLORES". The second would lean for a Gothic origin " RAUS" meaning into Germanic " roseau" the city being surrounded in the beginning of marsh.

Rozay was surrounded by ramparts of which there remain important vestiges. On the thirteen turrets of origin, there remains eight about it. One reached inside the city by three doors. Both which remains are classified Historic buildings. The old ditches are filled and, planted trees and of lawn, offer places of walk. Before the marriage of Philippe IV with Jeanne de Navarre, Rozay was in a separating walk (see Pécy).

In 1790, during creation of the departments, Rozay had only 231 votes and Melun which had collected 239 of them became the prefecture of the Département of Seine-et-Marne. Rozay became chief town of district. In 1926 the district disappeared, Rozay is today chief town of canton.

Around the town hall, in the streets evoking the time when the city was commercial, place of the market, street to cheeses, places old Pilori, one can see corbelling and half-timbered houses.

The positive one, going back to 1723, is allotted to the Organ builder Deslandes and to died of this one the instrumental part would have been entrusted to Nicolas Collard or L.A.Clicquot. The organ case, gone back to 1737, could thus have been conceived by the latter.
