Royals de Cornwall

The Royals de Cornwall are old a frankness from Hockey in North America. The team, based with Cornwall in the province of the Ontario in Canada, first of all evolved/moved in the Ligue of hockey major junior of Quebec (of 1969 with 1981) then in the Ontario Hockey League (of 1981 with 1992).

History

Before belonging to LHJMQ, Royals existed already and evolved/moved in the Central Junior has Hockey League and this since 1961. After their candidature for a place in the OHL is rejected, they integrate LHJMQ during its creation in 1969.

Royals then know good seasons they gain even three Coupes Memorial of the Canadian Ligue of hockey in 1972, 1980 and 1981.

Following this success, the team changes league and joined the Ontario Hockey League , decision which will cause to irritate the fans by the first hour and during the eleven following seasons, the assistance of the public will not be extraordinary.

In 1992, the frankness moves with Newmarket in the province of the Ontario and becomes the Royals de Newmarket for two seasons before taking the direction of Sarnia to become the Sting de Sarnia.

Prize list of the team

Evolving/moving in the Exchange Junior has Hockey League, Royals gained the title of the regular season in 1966, 1967 and 1968. Time of their presence in the OHL, Royals did not gain anything, on the level equips.

In the LHJMQ, on the whole, Royals will gain five titles divisions, three Coupes of the President and each time the three Coupes Memorial. Royals belong to the restricted circle of the seven teams having gained the Coupe Memorial two years of continuation (in 1980 and 1981).

Royals and the LNH

55 former players of Royals joined the National league of hockey, 31 played in the LHJMQ and 29 in the OHL. Five another players played in the two editions of the franknesses and the LNH.

With the Temple of re-elected hockey

This section introduces the important players in the history of Royals who acquired one of most beautiful rewards in the LNH, the access to the Temple of re-elected hockey. To be allowed with the Temple of the fame, the file of each petitioner will have to pass in front of eighteen members of the committee and to receive at least the three-quarters of the votes (fifteen members). Each year, are allowed to the maximum:
  • four players ,
  • two builders . This category corresponds to the people who do not play directly hockey but have a significant impact on hockey. It can be a question trainers, presidents, owners of franknesses or of personalities of the media.
  • a referee or line judge.
For the players, the referee or line judge, the person must have taken his retirement of his career in ice for at least three years. In the past, there were exceptions for the players equipped with an exceptional talent which, according to the committee, deserved to be established before the three regulatory years. That was the case for ten players of which Mario Lemieux. Two former players of Royals allowed to the Temple of were re-elected hockey.

The first is old the guard Islanders of New York Billy Smith. Smith played as a guard for Royals at the time of their first season in 1969-70. Skating rink

Royals played their match of the LHJMQ in the skating rink Water Street Arena , delor first season at 1976, year when it is famous If Miller Arena in the honor of the director of the parks and gardens of the town hall.

Time of the OHL, Royals played in the Cornwall Civic Complex , located at two steps in the old skating rink. This skating rink accommodated in 1990 the match of stars between the OHL and the LHJMQ, gained by the OHL 3 goals with 0.
