Causes
The decrees of “two thirds”, which is used to lock the access to the Council to the Assemblies to the detriment of the royalists, exasperated the moderate ones. The royalists, of which Vincent-Marie Viénot de Vaublanc, and their sections, whose principal one, the section Lepeletier, rise and decide to react by carrying out an insurrection the purpose of which is to force the Convention thermidorienne to revoke the decrees.
Preparations
The 10 vendémiaire, the section Lepeletier calls with the insurrection and convenes its voters for the 11. Eighty voters of 15 sections go there. The evening of the 11 vendémiaire, seven sections are declared in insurrection: the Lepeletier sections, Ridges Mills, Contract-Social, Th3e4atre Fran1cais, Brutus, Temple and Poissonnière. October 4th, 1795, Convention, informed preparations of the royalists, brings back its decrees on the disarmament of the “terrorists”. The following day (13 vendémiaire year IV), it charges Paul Barras command with the troops of Paris and associates five generals Jacobins to him, of which Napoleon Bonaparte and Guillaume Marie-Anne Brune. In fact, it is Napoleon who directs the operations. He charges Joachim Murat, then major, to seize the forty guns of the sections gathered with the camp of Fine sands. These guns are placed at the ends of all the streets which lead to Convention.
Insurrection and repression
The general Louis Michel Auguste Thévenet, known as “Danican general”, puts himself at the head of part of the national guards come to reinforce the royalist sections. Those try to go on the Tuileries, seat of Convention, but are pushed back. At 3 p.m., Convention is encircled. The risen sectionnaires, is approximately: 25000 men, endeavor to fraternize with the soldiers who defend Convention. Paul Barras gives the order to open fire and Napoleon Bonaparte orders with the gunners to draw. He lets the grapeshot draw during three-quarter from hour. There are approximately 300 died among the insurrectionists on the steps of the church Saint-Roch.The military committee pronounces 64 death sentences, of which two will be effective: that of Lafond, section head Lepeletier, and that of Lebois, section head of the Th3e4atre Fran1cais
It is a victory of Convention and Republic, but acquired thanks to the intervention of the army, and in particular of the general Napoleon Bonaparte, that this operation makes famous. It will be called the “Vendémiaire general”.
The church Saint-Roch in Paris preserves the traces of the corrosion of October 5th, 1795.
