Royal tombs of Koguryŏ

Located at the south of the North Korea, the whole of the royal tombs of the Koguryŏ lies within a beautiful landscape scope. This funerary unit dating from the time of the kingdom of Koguryŏ, which dominates the north of the Korea and is of Mandchourie of 37 before J. - C. with 668 after J. - C., was registered in 2004 with the World heritage of humanity by UNESCO. The tombs, remarkable by their murals, date from the end of the kingdom from Koguryŏ, one of most powerful of the Far East of at the 7th century.

The area of P' yŏngyang (capital starting from 427), of Namp' O and Kangso includes/understands 63 individual tombs of the end of the kingdom of Koguryŏ.

These tombs are all that remains of this culture. Among: 10000 tombs of this time, only 90 of those which were discovered are decorated. These tombs were used for the kings, queens and with their family. Paintings of some, as the 3 {{E}} falls from Anak, highly coloured, offer a single point of view on the Mythologie and the daily life of the time.

The following criteria decided inscription with the world heritage of humanity:

  • the murals are masterpieces of the period of Koguryŏ. The tombs in themselves are evidence of the ingeniousness of the builders of then;
  • the habits of Koguryŏ influenced all Far East, including Japan;
  • the tombs offer an incomparable source on the culture of Koguryŏ, as well the daily life as the funerary habits;
  • the tombs of Koguryŏ are an important example of human funerary typology.

Many tombs were plundered during the period of Japanese occupation.

A site of Koguryo in China east also registered with the world heritage of the United Nations. This site includes/understands the archaeological vestiges of 3 cities and 40 tombs: the town of mountain of Wunu, the town of Guonei and the town of mountain of Wandu, 14 tombs imperial and 26 tombs the noble ones.
