Royal python

The royal python ( Python regius ) is a Serpent nonpoisonous terrestrial of the family of the python S. One finds it in savannas of Africa of the west, in particular with the Ghana, the Togo and the Bénin. The name " royal" (of Latin " regius") would come owing to the fact that the queen Cléopâtre carried them rolled up around her wrists.

The royal pythons generally have a light chestnut-green and black color, as well as a pale yellow belly. However, the colors can vary because of genetic mutations. An adult can measure of 0,9 up to 1,80 meter. An adult female measures on average between 1 and 1,5 m, a male being smaller, between 60 and 90 cm.

Sexual maturity is reached between 18 months and 4 years. The life expectancy is on average from 20 to 25 years, the record being 48 years for a royal python in captivity.

In captivity

Because of their reasonable size, compared with other pythons, and their flexible temperament, the royal pythons became very popular as pets. The pythons captured in wild medium have more evil to adapt to the captivity, with for consequences of the Anémie or the parasitic infections. Their food consists of small rodents.

Determination of the sex

The pythons and the Boa S have pins on each side of the Cloaque. These pins are important because they make it possible the python to be clutched with its partner during the coupling. Those of the male are generally larger than those of the female.
