History
In 1655, the Jamaica becomes English. In 1656, conscious of the strategic importance of the place which makes of it the bolt of access to bay of Kingston, they found Royal Port there. The famous pirate Henry Morgan reign on the city and founds a code of piracy. For that, it is officially named governor of the island by the English. Preachers and puritans prophesy that such an amount of vice will involve the damnation of the city… June 7th 1692, little before midday, a terrible earthquake gives them reason. At the time of the third jolt, a large part of the city is absorbed in bay… This cataclysm involves the end of piracy in Port-Royal. The English rebuild the city and strengthen it. It became the principal British military place in the the Caribbean. Horatio Nelson, future triumphant victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, settles there.
In the middle of the 19th century British and Spaniards put an end to the hostilities. Port-Royal then saw trade until the passage of the century which marks the decline of the city… Today, Port-Royal is a peaceful village of fishermen. Only some fortifications point out the splendor of this city. For most adventurous, followers of diving, it is here that one of most important underwater archeological sites in the world is the. According to the specialists, the Port-Royal absorbed is to be put on an equal footing with the site of Pompéi so much the richness of the ruins is large.
