History and architecture

Construction was started in 1861 and proceeded in several phases, with some sections opening before others even started to be built. Construction was completed in 1888. The building was designed by the captain Francis Fowke of the Body of the royal engineers, which also built the Royal Albert Hall. Outside, of inspiration Venisienne of the Rebirth, contrasts strongly with the flooded principal hall of light, inspired close Hook De luxe hotel. At the beginning, most of its collections came from the museum from the Université from Edinburgh; there is even a bridge connecting the museum to the old buildings of the university. The students regard the collections as their, and the conservative would often find the objects exposed modified or even lacks. The " bouquet" place in the years 1870 had, when the students who made a festival noted that the museum also gave a reception for the notable ones of the city, and had stored coolings on the bridge. When the museum realized that the drinks missed, the bridge was walled dice the following day and remained since.

Many extensions in the back of the museum considerably since then prolonged it. In 1998, took place the inauguration of the Musée of Scotland, which is connected internally to the royal museum.
