The royal military College of Canada ( CMR ), located at Kingston, Ontario, is a Military academy. Only federal University with the Canada, it trains the personnel of the Canadian Armed forces.

History

June 1st 1876, the Military College off Canada opens its doors with the first cash classifies 18 pupil-officers, which will be later known like the Vieux Eighteen. The CMR is located on the point Frédérick, a small peninsula with the confluence of the Fleuve the St. Lawrence and Canal Curtain on the Lake Ontario. The place is an military establishment since 1789 and was an important naval base at the time of the Guerre of 1812.

Following the Second world war, two other military Colleges are open, that is to say the royal military Collège of Midsummer's Day to the Quebec and the Royal Roads Military College in Colombia-British. The latter will then close their doors in the tread of crossed budgetary made by the government with the capacity. The College of Kingston is the only one which will remain open. However, in July 2007, the Minister for Defense announced reopening partial of the CMR of Midsummer's Day.

The college has approximately 5  000 pupils, majority being of the student by correspondence. The core of the College is however composed by the squadron of the pupil-officers, which gathers the military students registered with the programmes of study of first cycle. Some 1  000 students who composes it resident in mainly on the campus and carry scarlet, is the traditional uniform of the College, which is of red color.

The squadron is divided as for it into 10 squadrons having their own structure of command. The pupil-officers occupy of the positions of leadership within the squadron and of their respective squadron, these positions aim at developing their qualities of chiefs, essential with any officer.

The program of the CMR is to constitute of four components in which an raise-officer must succeed in to obtain his diploma of the CMR.

The élofs not reaching the minimal standard of bilingualism must thus follow language classes second in addition to the courses associated with the syllabus with their school program. They are also held to take part in intramural sports within team. List principal infrastructures on the ground of the college

The Strong Frédérick :

  • It acts of liftings of ground and great constructions on the southern point of the peninsula. Construction began in 1789. There remain about it today only the ground works, some guns and a wall on the northern face.
the stone Frigate ( Stone Frigate in English, commonly called “ the boat ”):
  • It is a building built in 1820 to lodge the weapons of the boats demobilized after the Guerre of 1812. In 1876, it became the dormitory of the Vieux Eighteen. It is about its function still nowadays.
  • It shelters at present the members of Squadron 1.
The Turn Martello :
  • It is a fortification built in 1845 in the center of Strong the Frederique. It belongs to the series of fortifications designed to protect the town of Kingston and the entry of the Channel Curtain. The Strong Henry, which overhangs the college, fact part of this series of constructions
The Mackenzie :
  • Builds in 1876, it is the first construction on the peninsula intended for an academic function. It is easily recognizable in its central turn decorated with a clock on each one of its four faces. Probably the most known symbol of the college, it overhangs the ground of parade.
The Strong Lasalle :
  • It is a dormitory built in 1913. It is located at the western end of the ground of parade. It is connected, on its second floor, Yeo Hall by a covered footbridge. At the beginning, it was about a very simple building with only one corridor by floor. Enlargings with the passing of years added wings to give the shape out of U. Then the last restorations the years 1990 firm the loop by the construction of a section connecting the end of the wings, which leaves an interior court in the middle of the building.

The Currie :
  • Building in the east of Mackenzie. Occupied mainly by classes of language, buildings administrative and the buildings of the Otter squadron.
the commemorative Arch :
  • Monument inaugurated in 1923 for all the former pupil-officers died with the combat at the time of the First World War
  • This monument has a particular significance for the pupil-officers since it is used as main door at the time of their first day as a member of the squadron and of exit door when they leave the college at the end of the ceremony of graduation. Except for the ceremonies of the Day of the memory, no raise-officer passes under the Arch before it graduated college.
The Yeo Hall :
  • It is a multipurpose building built in 1936. It is located at the center of turn the dormitories. It is occupied mainly by the dining room pupil-officers and the mess all-ranks.
The strong Haldimand :
  • It is a dormitory built in 1949. It is located at the south of Yeo Hall. It is connected by footbridges to Yeo Hall and at the height Champlain. It is at present in restoration (July 2006)
  • It normally shelters the members of squadrons 6 and 8.
The Massey :
  • It is an academic building built in 1960 which, in addition to the offices and classrooms, shelters one of both Bibliothèque S of the college.
The strong Champlain :
  • It is a dormitory built in 1960. It is a building in form of U where the ends of the wings are connected by footbridges at the height Haldimand, forming an interior court between the two dormitories.
  • It normally shelters squadrons 9 and 10.
The Girouard :
  • It is an academic building inaugurated in 1977
The Sawyer :
  • It is an academic building inaugurated in 1977. It is the academic building bulkiest. It consists of five modules , that is to say cubic sections of form and similar size, connected to each other. In addition to the offices and the classrooms, Sawyer lodges the majority of the Laboratoire S of Science and Ingénierie of the college. One of these laboratories includes/understands a nuclear reactor of search for class Slowpoke-2.

Anecdote

The term “the Old men Eighteen”, more known under its english language version of “ The Old Eighteen ” represents the first promotion of the CMR. The list of their names must be memorized by all the officer cadets today.
