Royal manufacture of Bath-the-Baths
The Royal Manufacture of Bath-the-Baths was rested by royal decree dated June 18th 1733.
As the majority of the industrial plants built at that time it are at the edge of a river allowing the use of the hydraulic force and in the middle of a forest which gets wood and the charcoal to him necessary to heat the forging mills and furnaces.
It was initially a very important production unit of tinplate (galvanized iron) thus named in opposition to black iron, gross of forging mill or foundry.
The whole of the site includes/understands several industrial buildings (workshops of tinning (1736), market with coal (1779, 1859)…) residences for the workmen (18th century), of the cattle sheds, the house of the foremen, the vault (1735), a refrigerator and the castle (32 parts) of the ironmaster surrounded by a park containing of many varieties of trees of which several rare species.
History
- 1733 Georges Puton directs manufacture, Claude and Jean-François Coster, Jean-Baptiste Villiez are his associates.
- 1742 it passes under the control of Joseph Antoine Vallet, ironmaster which then had several iron-foundries, mills and paper mills as well in the valley of Masevaux as in the area of Bath-the-Baths.
- the 1778 family Falatieu (Joseph and Claude Thomas) becomes owner of the establishment. Manufacture employs then nearly 500 people, it is one of most important in France.
- 1843 it takes the name of Société Falatieu and company
- XIXe century Société of the nail factories of the Manufacture of Baths
- 1914: startup of a clog factory
- 1951: end of the activities.
It is currently in the course of restoration (the site is registered with the inventory of the historic buildings) and can be visited. One now finds there a riding school and an inn. The turbines of a small hydroelectric station replaced the paddle wheel of the factory of formerly.
