Royal Orchestra of Concertgebouw

The royal Orchestre of Concertgebouw ( Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest in Dutch) is the the Symphony orchestra most important and most famous of the Netherlands.

History

Its name comes from the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the building (famous for its Acoustique) where it gives the majority in its concerts. Its “royal” title was conferred to him by the queen Beatrix in 1988.

Concertgebouw is inaugurated the April 11th 1888 but they are only a few months later that the orchestra of the same name is founded. Its first concert takes place the November 3rd 1888, the orchestra being then directed by Willem Kes.

Seven years later, it is Willem Mengelberg which becomes about it the main thing Leader. It remains at its head until in 1945, that is to say during fifty years, unusual a enough amount of time for a Musical director (two other famous examples are Evgeni Mravinski with the Philharmonic orchestra of Leningrad and Eugene Ormandy with the Orchestre of Philadelphia). During his “reign”, one counts among the guests of the orchestra the prestigious names of Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinski, Bela Bartok, Serge Rachmaninov, Serge Prokofiev.

In 1945, it is Eduard van Beinum which succeeds Mengelberg. After its death undergoes in 1959, Bernard Haitink and Eugen Jochum shares the direction, the first remaining the principal chief until in 1988. Starting from this date, and until in 2004, Riccardo Chailly becomes the principal chief of the orchestra (the first not to be Dutch). Since 2004, it is the Latvian chief Mariss Jansons which replaces it at this station.

The orchestra is under the patronage of the royal Princesse Máxima, wife of the crown prince Willem-Alexander to the Netherlands.
