Royal Company of Canada

The royal Company of Canada (in English Royal Society off Canada ), founded in 1882, is a Canadian organization made up of scientists and remarkable scholars of Canada. Its main aim is to promote the knowledge and research in arts, the letters and sciences.

Description

In XXIe century, it counts approximately 1  800 members: men and women are chosen by their pars according to their remarkable works in arts, the letters and sciences. The president is member of a committee which selects the members of the Ordre of Canada.

The company diffuses, near the Canadian population, the important diversified knowledge of its members, just like it offers councils in the fields social, cultural, economic and scientific. Its members are available to evaluate the consequences of different significant events concerning the Canadians and offer, by the means of a council of experts, an independent service, in particular near the government, in connection with public affairs. It promotes more the high level of knowing and of research in all the fields of schooling, just like it underlines greatest successes in research and innovation by electing novel members. The company actively seeks the collaboration of other academic organizations, it does not matter their nationality. Annually, at the time of symposiums, it offers a place of exchanges on important subjects.

The election by the company constitutes the highest Canadian distinction for the scientists and scholars. When admitted by the company, the member can add to his name the abbreviation MSRC for “Membre of the royal Company of Canada” or FRSC for “Fellow off the Royal Society off Canada”.

It should be noted that the Royal Society and the Institut of France are models for the company.

History

It was founded in 1882 per John Campbell, 9th duke of Argyll, which was General governor of Canada at this time.

Among the founding members, one finds Sir Sanford Fleming, the creator of the universal Time and Sir William Osler, one of large the Physicien S of the 19th century. In 1883, a law of the Canadian Parliament in fact a corporation and gives him royal letters.

In 1989, a convention of academic exchanges is signed between the royal Company of Canada and the Institute of France.
