Royal Burgh

A royal burgh ( Royal burgh in English) is a burgh of Scotland founded or bought by a royal charter. This name was officially abolished in 1975, but actually remains current in number of them.

  • Aberdeen
  • Berwick-upon-Tweed
  • Edinburgh
  • Dunfermline
  • Elgin
  • Forres
  • Linlithgow
  • Montrose
  • Peebles
  • Perth (which had a precedence of all the others burghs royal except Edinburgh)
  • Rutherglen
  • Roxburgh (its statute was revoked thereafter because of the disappearance of the original city, become simple hamlet)
  • Stirling
  • Tain
