Roya

The Roya (in Occitan Ròia , in Italian Roia ) is a coastal Fleuve which takes its source in France with the Col of Tightens and joined the the Mediterranean in Italy with Vintimille. Over an overall length of 60 km, only the last fifteen kilometers are in Italy. The axis Vintimille - Limone by this valley in fact a very known River and a road connection very important, doubled of a spectacular railway line which comprises with Breil-on-Roya a junction towards Nice.

Etymology and gentilé

“Roya” indicates not only the coastal Fleuve but also the Vallée. The inhabitants of this valley and in any case those High-Roya are the Royasques . The term “Roya” comes from the Latin , rubea , which wants to say “red”.

Political affiliations

Until 1860, the course of Roya was entirely in the territory of the Royaume of Piedmont-Sardinia. During the transfer of the County of Nice in France, which assigned to the latter the communes of Breil-on-Roya ( Breglio ) and Saorge ( Saorgio ), Roya was to pass the border twice, entering to France with Saint-Dalmas of Tends ( San Dalmazzo di Tenda ) and while leaving to Piène-Low ( Piena Bassa ). The peace treaty of 1947 assigned to France, after a local referendum, the high valley of Roya, with the communes hitherto Italian of Tende ( Tenda ) and Aspires to It ( Briga Marittima ), moving of this fact more in north the Franco-Italian border.

Language

In the high valley of Roya, one speaks the Royasque , dialect of transition between the Occitan and the Parlers gallo-italics (Ligure).
