Roy Fox Lichtenstein , born the October 27th 1923 with Manhattan with the the United States, and deceased the September 29th 1997 with Manhattan, is one of the most important artists of the movement Pop American art. Its works are strongly inspired by the publicity and the popular imagery of its time, as well as “comics” (band-drawn). It will describe itself its style as being “as artificial as possible”.
In 1940, Lichtenstein completes its secondary studies successfully, and leaves New York to be registered with the Ohio State University, which proposes courses in workshop and a diploma of fine art. With the bursting of the Second world war, it must stop its studies during three years to be useful in the army, of 1943 to 1946. After the war, it resumes its studies in Ohio. It is generally allowed that one of its professors of the time, Hoyt L. Sherman, exerted a great influence on its future work (it thus baptized a workshop which he founded within the OSU " Hoyt L. Sherman Studio Art Center"). After having obtained its diploma, Lichtenstein is engaged as professor, station which it will episodically occupy during ten years. The first exposure to be to him exclusively devoted takes place in New York in 1951.
He moves with Cleveland in 1951, where he lives during six years - but he still frequently goes to New York. Between two artistic period of manufactures, he exerts varied trades then, of draftsman with decorator of windows. At that time, its work consists of a reinterpretation cubist of other works, like those of the painter Frederic Remington for example. In 1957, he moves again for New York, where he starts again to teach. It is at that time that it adopts the abstract Expressionnisme - style which it put of time to appreciate. In 1959, it reveals its work with a public far from enthusiastic.
There is a concept of métapeinture here. It uses the system of the screen, and is based, to be inspired, of the stereotypes and hygiene or food. (stereotypy of the styles). He likes the dish, and with an advertizing convention. Its art is a transfer of highly indexed forms, its images like are digested by the typography.
He is the author of many works, among which: - Drowning Girl (1963) - Ohhh… Alright… (1964) - The girl with to hate ribbon (1965) These three tables express the vision of the artist perfectly, in the middle of the Années 1960, attending the decline of the social reports/ratios. " two women holding a fleur" in 1954. here, one can observe his mechanism. The flower seems to be out of stone! " drowning girl" 1963 Ohhh. alright " 1964 Let us observe also a graphic convention in its table " poubelle". Blow of brush, created in 1965, is a caricature of Pollock. It paints " châssis" in 1968 which represents the back of table itself. " workshop of the artist of Mickey" in 61 is interesting because it comprises full with enigmas. In particular a mirror without reflection. (this would be already a table of a mirror?). It created " I" house; in 1998. In 1963 it completes a named painting " Whaam! " titrate coming from the onomatopoeia present on work. For this painting it used the characteristics of the cartoon.
