Roxy Music is a group of British music rock'n'roll , created at the beginning of the Années 1970 by Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno. It was primarily active of 1971 with 1975, then of 1978 with 1983. The group was reformed for a round in 2001 and a new album is announced for end 2007.
History
Genesis of the group
After studies of art to Newcastle where it is interested in the
Pop art, to
Andy Warhol and the
Conceptual art, Bryan Ferry settles with
London in
1968, where it teaches ceramics, while composing of the songs. He postulates vainly to integrate
King Crimson,
Robert Fripp does not retain it, but directs it towards its agent David Enthoven, of firm E.G. They are at that time that he meets Andy Mackay and
Brian Eno, then students in Winchester School off Arts, section modern music - it is the trio founder of what will become Roxy Music. The musical project of Ferry takes as a starting point the
Pop art which he studied: to adapt elements of the popular culture and to restore them like works of art, on the level of a group pop/rock'n'roll.
First albums
Paul Thompson is engaged during the summer 1971 like beater, it is joined by the guitarist David O' List. The group makes its first recordings at the end of this year. In
1972, O' List is replaced with the Guitare by Phil Manzanera (of its true name Philip Targett-Adams), which becomes one of the pillars of group after of having been the technician of the sound. The recording of the first disc is financed by E.G and product by
Peter Sinfield, it leaves to
Island Records during the summer 1972 pennies the title
Roxy Music , it is a phenomenal and unhoped-for success, favorably accommodated by criticism. The 45 turns
Virginia Lime pit which is drawn from it, reached the 4th place of the charts of the
the United Kingdom. The impact of this new group is increased by the look declining and ambiguous of its members, which is worth sometimes the qualifier to him of
Glam rock'n'roll. In
1973, after individual the
Pyjamarama , comes the second album
For Your Pleasure which confirms the originality of the formation with arrangements of Eno. A deep disagreement (war of ego?) oppose this last to Bryan Ferry, on the musical orientation of Roxy Music, Eno chooses to leave for a singular personal career and many collaborations.
End of first Roxy Music
Always in 1973, Ferry leaves an album solo
These Foolish Things , the first of long series, in which it includes some of its preferred songs. To fill the departure of Eno, Eddie Jobson is recruited to hold the synthetizers and to play of the violin, it is a musician with the recognized talent, which made its first weapons in the group Curved Air. The bass player John Gustafson joined also the group for the scene, it takes part in the three following albums but does not become a permanent member of the group. The third album
Stranded also leaves in 1973, the register is mélodieux and more romantic than the precedents. In
1974, it is
Country Life in the line of the precedent, it is at that time that Roxy Music is made known with the
the United States.
Siren (
1975), is more heterogeneous, the compositions are signed various musicians, and especially the group seems private of orientation. This album which marks the end of first Roxy Music is pulled by famous the
Love has drug . After separation, leaves an album recorded in concert,
Viva! Roxy Music in
1976.
Reformation
The disappearance of the group intervenes at the time when it reaches the top of its popularity. Ferry continues a promising career solo, in
1977, giving up the recoveries, it leaves an album personal compositions
In Your Mind . But the arrival of the punk movement will compromise this orientation and will place the crooner towards the margin. It is at that time that his wife, the American mannequin
Jerry Hall, leaves it for
Mick Jagger Rolling Stones. In
1978, decision is taken to reform Roxy Music with the original quartet: Ferry, Manzanera, Mackay and Thompson. The exit of
Manifesto in
1979 gives the group in good place and several titles of the album know a great diffusion. The second life of the group is a commercial success and the two following albums will be success.
Flesh and Blood in
1980 is drawn by the piece
Over You ,
Avalon in
1982 is also popular with
Avalon and
More Than This . It should be noted that the resumption of
Jealous Guy of
John Lennon in
1981, largely contributed to sit the popularity of the group.
After an American round in 1983, Ferry decides to give up the group with the profit of its career solo. The other musicians vainly try to continue the adventure, with a new singer James Wraith, taking the name of Explorers.
In 2002, new meeting of the musicians for a round which will last 2 years. The June 11th 2005, Roxy Music occurs at the festival of the island of Wight and on July 2nd following to the Live 8 to Berlin.
A new album is envisaged, and Brian Eno took part in two days of recording. A new round (without Eno which therefore did not reinstate the group) takes place in 2006.
