The row was a mode of division of the rural grounds in News-France, resulting from the French Régime. This one was founded in 1628 and was abolished in 1854 by the Loi of 1854. The rows were positioned along the rivers, which were the only transportation routes of the time and guaranteed fact even the survival of the inhabitants. The concession S were in the shape of very lengthened rectangle and were placed perpendicularly compared to the river, other rows could thereafter be built the first parallel to and be joined to this one by an assembled . Compared to the canton (9,6km by 9,6km), mode of division Anglo-américain, each concession of a row was low-size (200m by 2000m), but had an social aspect much more marked, by the fact that the buildings were brought closer from/to each other.

History

Robert Giffard is the first to have established the system of the row, mode of organization of the rural areas which extended thereafter to all the colony and which was preserved until our days.
