Route main road of France
See also: RN
The trunk roads are, in France, of the important Voie S or which cross broad portions of the territory, in opposition to the secondary or communal roads. Their use is free, except during the crossing of some works of art subjected to Péage. They are opened with all the Véhicule S, except on certain sections having the statute of Expressway.
The maintenance of these ways is with the load of the State; until in 2005, that was done via the departmental managements of the Equipment. The mission concerns now the general advices (concept of RNIL “trunk road of local interest”) and the Directions Interdépartementales of the Roads (DIR).
A grid of the whole of France
Until 2006, the France counted: 30500 km of trunk roads and not conceded Highways. As comparison, the secondary roads cover a total distance from: 365000 km.
The first trunk roads (of 1 with 24bis) left the Portes of Paris, even of the Parvis of Notre-Dame where a medallion registered in the ground marks the “Point zero of the roads of France”. The following roads, having been built thereafter, supplemented the network by transversals netting very effectively the whole of the metropolitan territory.
A law of 1972 downgraded a great number of trunk roads in secondary roads. The law of Décentralisation of the August 13rd 2004 allowed a transfer to the department of the major part of the remaining trunk roads. A decree published with the Official journal the December 6th 2005 gives the list of the roads which remain in the national highway network, the others having to be displaced by orders of the prefect. This process of downgrading is already strongly advanced in 2007 and must be in theory completed in 2008. The residual national highway network is of approximately: 10500 km, to which the whole of the conceded highway network is added.
For a history of the network of the trunk roads, which succeeded the royal roads and the imperial roads, see the article French Highway network.
