Route main road 40 (Argentina)
The Ruta Nacional 40 is an important road way of Argentine which crosses the country of north to the south, since Cabo Vírgenes ( course of the virgins ) in the extreme south of the Patagonie until Quiaca at the Bolivian border in province of Jujuy. It is a mythical main road which parallel to runs the Andes cordillera by connecting the most important national parks.
It is the longest road of the country, crossing the territory in its bigger length and traversing several of the tourist areas and the principal attractions of the territory.
Currently this mythical way was promoted like national tourist product. The road makes more than 4.928 km, starting in Patagonie with the sea level, crossing 20 national parks, important 18 cours d' water, connects 27 Andean collars and goes up until a little more than 5.000 meters of altitude on the level of the collar of Abra del Acay in the province of Salta.
The road passes by El Calafate, the Glacier Perito Moreno, the Lac Puelo, the town of El Bolsón, San Carlos de Bariloche, Villa Angostura. It belongs to Ruta del Vino ('' wine trail '') with Mendoza. It leads to the fossil layers of dinosaurs in province of San Juan, with the thermal springs of Catamarca, Tafí del Valle, splendid the Vallées Calchaquíes, the Quebrada de Humahuaca inheritance of Humanity like to the Puna.
Just as legendary road 66 of the the United States, the road number 40 is a symbol and an emblem of Argentina. She traverses eleven provinces: Santa Cruz, Chubut, Río Negro, Neuquén, Mendoza, San Juan, Rioja, Catamarca, Tucumán, Salta and Jujuy.
In 2006, the trunk road 40 is covered to 48%. The provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro are the only ones where the road is completely asphalted, tandis in those of Salta and Jujuy one finds few covered sections.
The principal promoter of this longitudinal main road was the periodist Federico B. Kirbus, thanks to certain articles and books. ( Mágica Ruta 40 or magic road 40 - )
Since one started to build the road in 1935 it changed several times of course. The current course goes back to November 2004, moment when one decided in addition to changing the milestones to fix the zero at his southern end, Cabo Vírgenes, the fine bottom of Patagonie.
It should be noted that the section ranging between Abra Pampa and Quiaca belongs at the same time to the Trunk road 9 and main road 40.
