The trunk road 18 , or RN 18 , is a trunk road French connecting Étain to Longwy. The decree of December 5th 2005 envisages its downgrading.
At the origin, in 1824, and until the downgradings of the years 1970, in addition to this layout was added a section of Verdun to Étain, section pertaining to current the Trunk road 3. RN 18 did not finish with Longwy but went until Aubange, at the Belgian border; this section was displaced in RD 918 .
The role of RN 18 remains limited: its carried national remains reduced (it ensures of the connection Luxembourg - Verdun, Luxembourg - Rheims, Arlon - Rheims…), its regional role being limited too. Only the portion Longwy - Longuyon (which is besides one of the portion of road more the accidentogenes of France) drains a relatively significant number motorists, the majority being French crosses border dailies to work going to the Luxembourg near. (8 510 vehicles/day in 2004). The second portion, Longuyon - Tin, drains as for it a weak traffic. It is especially a hyphen between the High-Country and the center meusien. (less than 5.000 vehicles/days in 2004). However, taking into account the proximity of the Luxembourg and by its employment, the traffic has increased for a few years.
The layout of RN 18 was slightly modified in 2005. Whereas before the road finished with the downtown area of Étain, a deviation of the city, classified in RN 18 , was open in November 2005 and lengthens the layout of RN 18 of 4 km.
