History
- the project of opening-up of the Brittany launched during the years 1960 was going to change the course of this main road: it was gradually put in 2×2 ways (as well as RN170 between Quimper and Daoulas) and connected Brest to Nantes, but at the beginning without installations of safety. Thus one could find at-grade junctions, a railway level crossing, passages pedestrians (even of herds…), the whole on this road very circulating (110 km/h). Of more than many cities remained to cross (the Rock-Bernard, Auray, Quimper, Landerneau…). The situation notably improved during years 80-90 with the security of the axis and the opening of the missing by-passs. The RN165 should pass soon under highway statute (A82) finishing the installation of this axis which will have lasted nearly 40 years.
- to note that the section between Quimper and Douarnenez had been famous N765 in 1977 but had been very quickly downgraded, while RN170 simply had purely and been re-elected in RN165 to the opening of the Pont of Iroise close to Brest (towards 1985).
