1978: The First edition

In 1975, Bernard Hass, general secretary of the Trade union of the Sugar Producers and Rum of the Antilles, which seeks an idea to emphasize the die of rum, contact Florent de Kersauson. A few days later, Florent de Kersauson and Bernard Hass imagine a race with the veil in direction of the producing sugar and rum Antilles. The project under the arm, Florent de Kersauson contacts Eric Tabarly with which it sailed and Gerard Petitpas of company PEN Duick. " A race moreover? Not question! ".

By no means discouraged, both comparses bring the project to Michel Etevenon advertizing of Kriter, then sponsor of Olivier de Kersauson, the brother of Florent. A master stroke since Michel Etevenon then developed the project with the success which one knows today.

Its first edition in 1978 was marked by the disappearance of Alain Colas, as well as the victory over the wire of Michael Birch on “Olympus Photo” which preceded Michel Malinovsky on “Kriter V” for 98 small seconds.

Olympus having exceeded Kriter in front of a public many whereas the boats were almost in the sight of the finishing line (after more twenty-three days of race), this first edition symbolizes the moment when the multihulls acquired a supremacy vis-a-vis the monoshells. Before this race, all the boats ran in the same category.

The race and regulation

One can note that this race (just like the Vendée Globe), from the fact that it is held as a recluse over a very long time, is contrary with the payment to prevent the boardings at sea, cf regulates 5: Any ship must permanently ensure a visual and auditive day before suitable, by also using all the means available which are adapted to the existing circumstances and conditions, so as to allow a full appreciation of the situation and risk of boarding . The course of the race is thus derogatory.
