Route European

A European road is a road whose classification is under the responsibility of the Economic commission of the United Nations for Europe (UNECE) under the terms of a European agreement on the principal international arteries of traffic (AGR), made with Geneva the November 15th 1975.

In order to free itself from national classifications, the European roads profit from a European classification which does not vary from one country to another.

Classification

The classification of the European roads does not take account of the highway type (Autoroute, Trunk road, regional road, etc). It does not take either account of the presence of mountains or seas, which can stop the road. It is based on a squaring of the continent.

The system of classification is defined by UNECE since 1975, with a major change in 1992.

The roads of reference and the roads intermediate are known as of Class has, they have numbers with two digits. Minor roads, and the connections between the main roads are known as of Class B, and are numbered by 3 digits.

The roads North-South have odd numbers and the roads west-east have even numbers .

The main roads (of reference) North-South have numbers with two digits and end in the figure 5 (odd). The numbers increase by west in east.

The main roads (of reference) west-east have numbers with two digits and end in the figure 0 (even). The numbers increase north in the south.

The intermediate roads have odd numbers with two digits (North-South) or even numbers with two digits (west-east). Their numbers are intermediate between the roads of reference which frame them.

The roads of class B have 3 digits, the first figure is that of the reference nearest to north, the second figure is that of the reference nearest to the west, and the third figure is a serial number.

The North-South roads of class has in the east of E99 have odd numbers with 3 digits since 101 up to 129. The other rules apply to these roads.

Extensions

The appendix I container the ways of the roads E contained in the agreement of 1975 was amended with many recoveries and will undoubtedly be it still in the future.

The principal modifications are an extension towards the east, on the level of the countries of CEI and the Turkey; the extensions are also carried out in the Asian part of the Russia.

The list of the roads E shown hereafter shows these extensions but those are not reproduced on the http://www.elbruz.org site which is used as reference in the pages details . Information is given in two parts - part of origin , then possibly modified part . However, for these extensions, the list of the crossroads and junctions are not shown on an official document; this information must thus be checked before any use and is given provided, just as the orthography of the places.

Diagram of the European roads

One can consult on the Web a diagram of the European roads.

This diagram shows the horizontal axes in absolute position; the vertical axes are in relative position according to the establishment of the cities or the principal exchangers.
