Québécois Provincial roads, the 201 follows a NORTH-SOUTH orientation and is located in the area of the Montérégie at approximately a score of kilometers at the west of the Île of Montreal. Its overall length is approximately 71 km. It begins on southern bank from the Fleuve the St. Lawrence with Franklin, close to the border of the United States. It moves thereafter towards Valleyfield which it reaches while crossing the Beauharnois channel in multiplexing with the road 132. Then, it forms a short multiplexing with the Autoroute 30 (future Autoroute 530) before transverser Valleyfield under the name Boulevard Monseigneur-Langlois. It crosses then the St. Lawrence river and becomes a highway for 1,5 kilometers until the Autoroute 20 (secretly numbered Autoroute 920). At this place, it begins a multiplexing with the Autoroute 20 from 3 kilometers, and after, it is redirected towards north to finish on bank of the Rivière of Outaouais to Hudson.

It is the only road of series 200 to find itself partly on northern bank of the river.
