Québécois Provincial roads, the 170 , follows an orientation is/western on northern bank of the Fleuve the St. Lawrence. It serves the area of the Saguenay-Lake-Saint-Jean and Charlevoix. It begins with Métabetchouan-Lake-with-the-Cross in edge from the Lac Midsummer's Day and follows southern bank of the Rivière Saguenay until the Fleuve the St. Lawrence to Saint-Siméon. On its way, it tarverse the town of Saguenay.
Part of the road 170 between Jonquière and Alma was duplicated to 4 way in the end of the year 1990 within the framework of the construction project of the Autoroute 70. It was decided to transform this road into fast track with 4 way, instead of building the Autoroute 70 in parallel. To note that this section is not a highway. To the east of the Bay the road offers beautiful landscapes whereas it borders the National park of Saguenay.
