Roussillon (geography)

The Roussillon (in Catalan Rosselló ) is limited to the south by the Massif of Albères, in the west by the Pic of Canigou, in north by the Corbières, in the east by the the Mediterranean.

Geology

Roussillon is located on a trough fault whose formation is contemporary of that of the the Pyrenees. It was filled at the tertiary era and the Quaternaire of detrital materials and alluvia being able to reach four kilometers thickness.

The plain of Roussillon is included in the department of the the Eastern Pyrenees. Roussillon was attached to the France with the signature of the Traité of the Pyrenees.

Human geography

Roussillon, with the French part of the Cerdagne, the Conflent and the Vallespir was attached to France at the time of the treaty of the Pyrenees year 1659. Our day, still remain of many bonds with Catalonia.

  • language, the Catalan (approximately 43% of the inhabitants of the the Eastern Pyrenees speak or include/understand the Catalan);
  • culture: the folklore like the sardane, the kitchen, the local flag common to Provence and Aragon

Roussillon, because of these historical links with Catalonia is sometimes named Northern Catalogne by the inhabitants most attached to the Catalan culture. On the other hand the inhabitants who find in the history of the contestable evidence of nonthe catalanity of Roussillon, generally call the Eastern Pyrenees area. The choice semi-goat semi-cabbage of the name Roussillon in Languedoc-Roussillon was a means of sparing the two camps: To admit a particularism without clarifying its Catalan roots of them.
