Round island (Kerguelen)
The island Ronde is a island of the Indian Ocean located in the Archipel of the Kerguelen at the south of the Péninsule To rejoin of Baty, a Péninsule of the south-west of the Grande Ground. The Ronde island is located at approximately 10,5 kilometers in the south of the southern point of the Péninsule To rejoin of Baty, the course Bourbon. In spite of its evocative name, it does not present in a circular form , but Ovale: according to the most precise chart provided by the national geographical Institute on the Géoportail in August 2007, it is long approximately 700 meters to the maximum in the direction south-west-north-is but broad only 500 meters with more on the perpendicular axis.
Moreover, it is surrounded by two small small island S whose high limits of size are about a few tens of meters. One is located at the south-south-east of the culminating point of the island, which reaches 151 meters of altitude, while the other is with the north-north-west. At all events, both are distant of its coasts only of one hundred meters only, contrary to the four large rocks which one finds more in north, the rocks Trémarec . Aligned according to an axis south-be-north-west on a distance of approximately 900 meters, the latter are indeed located at more than one kilometer of the center of the Ronde island, or even of its coasts. Their name honors Yves Joseph de Kerguelen de Trémarec, the discoverer of all the archipelago.
For the remainder, the emerged ground nearest to the Ronde island is another rock reaching 18 meters in height located at the North-West at more than 6,5 kilometers. It is called rock Mengam or rock Mingam according to the charts. Only the first C-W communication seems correct, because Mengam is the name which a companion of adventure of Kerguelen de Trémarec carried during its first voyage.
