The Rotte is a Rivière Dutchwoman of the Holland-Southerner, affluent of the Nouvelle Meuse which it joined with Rotterdam.

Geography

Rotte starts in the Marais close to Moerkapelle. It passes through the Rottemeren ( lakes of Rotte ), by Bleiswijk and Bergschenhoek until Rotterdam, where it is thrown in the Nouvelle Meuse.

History

The origin of the town of Rotterdam is located around a Barrage on Rotte, built at the 13th century. This stopping was with the current crossroads of the Hoogstraat and the street of Binnenrotte .

In 1871, the Binnenrotte was filled within the framework of the construction of the Luchtspoor , a railway viaduct. For this year, water of Rotte has run via the Stokvisverlaat , the Delftse Vaart and the Vlasmarktsluis until the Leuvehaven, from where they join the Nouvelle Meuse. During the bombardment of the beginning of the Second world war, in May 1940, this connection was seriously damaged. Still during the war, the town planner Witteveen carried out a new connection between Rotte and Leuvehaven. However, since the war, there is no more River navigation in the center of Rotterdam and on Rotte.

During the construction of the East-West line of the subway of Rotterdam, the connection between Rotte and Leuvehaven were definitively stopped. Since, water of Rotte is evacuated via a pumping station close to the Oostplein .
