Rotherham

Rotherham is a city of the the United Kingdom, located in the North-East of the England, pertaining to the county of Yorkshire. It counts 255.000 inhabitants (Agglomération included/understood, figures of 1997), which places it at the 26th row of the English agglomerations.

Since 1990, it is twinned at the French city of Saint-Quentin (area Picardy, Sous-préfecture of the Département of Aisne). The area surrounding Rotherham is of rather rural nature, with the soft relief, mainly made up of hills relatively low.

Remarkable sites

- complex of " Magna ", the very first center of scientific adventure of Great Britain, to bring closer in France to the Futuroscope. Magna is targeted more on the power of the natural elements, such as Cyclone S, volcanic eruptions…

- ruins of the Abbey Cistercienne known as of Rock, built in 1147 and which the gardens such as one can see them at present are the work of the Paysagiste Capabiliby Brown and were carried out in 1774.

- Vault dedicated to all Saints (Al Saints') present in a model downtown area of the medieval Architecture perpendicular.

- two museums, that of the Clifton Park with a collection of potteries and objects in Glass, as well as the Military Museum of the " York and Lancaster Regimental "

Anecdotes

  • near to Rotherham, the small commune of Thorpe Salvin (elected Village more flowered of Great Britain ( Britain in Doom ) in 2002), where the Manoir Thorpe Salvin Hall is which has was used as decoration with the novel “ Torquilstone ” of Walter Scott.
  • Rotherham knew a certain celebrity in 1999 when a dozen delinquents, condemned to work of General interest, were to put out of ground hundreds of bulbs of jonquils in order to brighten the main streets of Rotherham. Those made use of the " innocentes" flowers to write a message which the inhabitants could discover at the time of flowering. " malfrats" had indeed planted the bulbs with an aim of composing the poetic message " Fuck You" (You will make foutre)
