Roswell is an American city located at the south-east of the New Mexico. Chief town of the County of Chaves, Roswell had a population of: 45199 inhabitants with the census of 2005 and extends on a surface from 70 km ². The city is located at a few kilometers in the west of the Rivière Pecos, in the north of the area of Carlsbad and the east of the mountains of Capitan. The town of Roswell is especially known to have been the place of one supposed crushing of UFO in 1947.
One finds many souvenir shops connected to extraterrestrial to the downtown area of Roswell. Several trade of national chains like McDonald's and Wal-Mart have an extraterrestrial topic.
USAAF bought a ground to build there an air base with 15 kilometers in the south the city in 1941.
It was the Roswell Army Air Field, renamed Walker Air Force Bases in June 1947.
There be also a camp of prisoner of war cash: 4800 German S and Italy NS captured during the War of the desert in North Africa.
The base was used as flying school for bombers then after war becomes one of the largest installations of the Strategic Air Command with: 5000 soldiers and: 5000 civil employees.
Several squadrons of bombardment whose 509th Bomb Wing settled there as well as intercontinental missiles Atlas which were stationed between 1961 and 1965 in silo S around the base.
The base was closed the June 30th 1967 and it is since a civil Aéroport serving the city as well as an industrial park, the Roswell International Air Center (RIAC).
